Louise (little LuLu) - April 2012

I received a frantic call from a co-teacher (and close friend) from my school yesterday. When she arrived at work that morning, there was a dog underneath a car in the parking lot. She warned me that the dog was in very bad shape, and that it was crying as if it was in pain. At first, we thought she might have been abused or hit by a car. After a few minutes, a young man was able to coax her out from under the car. Here are the first photos of Louise. (warning: some are graphic)

The next step in the world of animal rescue is always exhausting and can be disheartening. However, the key is to never give up. I usually begin to email as many rescue groups as I can think of, with pics attached...Only to receive quick responses that their program is full. This is not their fault. It's just the state of our city and it's stray dogs.

Long story short, I began stressing out as I realized that this dog was probably not going to be able to be rescued tonight. I got desperate and emailed a sweet couple that I know who had fostered for me before. They are taking a foster break, but I thought they would be able to point me in the right direction. Being the angels that they are, they told me to go pick her up and bring her to their vet. We would figure the rest out moving forward.

When I went to get her, she had moved underneath an old van. I tried for a while to get her out myself. She was too scared. Luckily, the man who had coaxed her out from underneath the other car was nearby and he helped me get her out again. She was crying, but you could tell she quickly learned to trust us. Her injuries were just so severe that she was in a lot of pain.

Her neck injuries were the worst.

After an initial vet visit, Louise appears to have a severe case of mange. She has demodex mange, which is very uncomfortable for her, but not contagious. She has scratched at her sores so many times that they turned into open wounds on her skin. Her wounds were so bad, I had to clean blood off the seats of my car. She cried when the doctor cleaned her wounds, but she will feel much better very soon.

Her car ride to the vet...
 A very grateful girl!
She quickly fell asleep in the backseat.

A great local rescue group, Harbored Souls, has agreed to add her to their already full program. They had such an enormous outpouring of support from people who saw her picture that they decided to go ahead and add her to the list of sweet pups that they save. If you'd like to donate towards her care, you can do that here:

A special "thanks" to the Breitzman family. They have taken in the special needs dogs that I find in south Dallas. They made her rescue possible.

Louise will be available to adopt through Harbored Souls in a few short months. Keep your eye out for this cutie!
